5 Tips On Managing Eczema

Over 27 million people are suffering from eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis. Though eczema is not contagious or extremely dangerous condition but it is an incurable and profoundly uncomfortable disease that leads to bad irritation with severe itchiness.

There is no doubt that eczema is caused either by environmental factors or transferred only genetically, and it is also certain that this disease requires extra attention and care. Eczema can be triggered easily and no matter what medicine you take, sometimes it will remain bothersome.

Dermatologists recommend a few precautions that can help ease the condition of atopic dermatitis. Through these tips, people can learn how to manage their eczema and enhance their condition.

1. The first and foremost tip is to keep your surroundings cool and easy. Definitely, you cannot manage the temperature outside, but when being inside the home, it is highly recommended to ensure the temperature of the house not to be less than 20oC. Well, the experts suggest 18oC is the ideal temperature for the people who are suffering from eczema.

2. After controlling the temperature, the next step is to limit physical contact to things that can cause severe irritation leading to itchiness. It is studied that detergents, household cleaners, harsh soaps, aftershaves, turpentine and the gas along with other solvents can flare up the condition, causing skin irritation.

3. It is recommended to avoid scratching the skin even if you feel worsening of the itchiness. Rubbing or scratching the skin can cause severe damage to the skin’s barrier, allowing the bacteria and other germs to cause infection. For that, it is recommended to apply cold compress to release the urge to scratch.

4. If your job involves prolonged handling of water or other chemical irritants, it is recommended to use vinyl or plastic gloves to protect the hands from having direct contact. Remove the gloves occasionally to avoid sweat buildup as the sweat or too hot condition can also trigger the condition. It is recommended to use lukewarm water with soap to wash the hands and later apply moisturizer immediately to the areas affected by eczema.

5. In winter, it is recommended to wear gloves when leaving the house as cold air along with low humidity can dry out the skin leading to severe itchiness. Wearing woolen or synthetic fabrics can also flare up the condition. In summers, it is recommended to use clothes that are made of soft cotton or has cotton blend in it.

With these 5 easy tips, people can manage eczema to a great extent with lesser irritation and living a simple happy life like the rest of us.
