What is Delayed Cord Clamping?

Sometimes, medical interventions are required during labor and delivery. Delayed cord clamping is one of the interventions alongside epidurals and emergency C-sections and simply means that the umbilical cord is rather clamped and cut one to three minutes after delivery as opposed to immediately.

There are indications that delayed cord clamping makes it possible for blood to continue to flow from the placenta to the newborn after delivery. Shreds of evidence from studies also suggest that this blood that flows to the placenta is very beneficial to newborn babies, especially to preterm babies.  Scientists have actually linked delayed cord clamping to increased iron and hemoglobin which are essential in reducing the risk of anemia in children. Of course, delayed cord clamping can also improve the circulation of blood in premature babies, thereby reducing the need for a blood transfusion. In addition, delayed cord clamping helps in reducing the risk of internal bleeding in the brain.

After delivery, the cord is normally clamped in two places: near the baby’s belly button as well as farther down the cord. Meanwhile, the cut is always made between these clamps by your partner, doctor, or midwife. Most medical experts however recommend that the baby be held near or at the level of the placenta before clamping as it increases blood flow. On the flip side it is believed that if the baby is raised above the placenta, gravity can instead pull back blood into the placenta, thereby depriving the baby of blood flow.

Even though the delayed length has not yet been standardized, clamping can be delayed if it happens more than 30 seconds after delivery.

Delayed cord clamping may be associated with jaundice, but its benefits still outweigh the risk since jaundice can easily be treated through phototherapy. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has made it clear that delayed cord clamping does not add the risk of excessive maternal blood loss or postpartum hemorrhage.1

6 Tips to Manage Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that occurs only in pregnant women. This condition happens when a woman cannot produce enough insulin resulting in high blood sugar levels. Gestational diabetes affects between 2 and 10 percent of all pregnancies, which means there are more than 130,000 cases each year. Having elevated blood sugar levels during pregnancy can lead to serious complications for both the mother and the fetus. Like other types of diabetes, the key to managing gestational diabetes is keeping your blood sugar levels under control.

1. Eat healthily
Eating healthy food will help you control your blood sugar levels. Make sure you eat the right amount of proteins, healthy starch, fruits, vegetables, and fats. Cut down on sugary drinks and processed food like ice cream, cakes, and biscuits. Instead of zero-calorie food, choose healthier alternatives such as whole food, fruits, and seeds. You are also encouraged to eat at least three meals a day and control your portion sizes to avoid gaining weight. Do not skip meals as it may prompt the body to crave for unhealthy diet choices.

2. Exercise regularly
Another effective way to manage gestational diabetes is to engage in regular physical activity. Exercise helps the body to use insulin more effectively, which results in lower blood sugar levels. It’s advisable to do mild to moderate exercises such as swimming, walking, jogging, or prenatal aerobics or yoga for at least 30 minutes every day.

3. Maintain a healthy weight
Overweight women are at a higher risk of having gestational diabetes. Moreover, overweight women with gestational diabetes tend to experience more complications as compared to those with a healthy weight. That’s why it’s important to eat low glycemic foodand exercise more to maintain a healthy weight. However, it’s not advisable to embark on a weight loss program during pregnancy. Just stick to moderate exercises and proper nutrition.

4. Test your blood sugar level
To control your blood sugar levels, you’ll need to test it regularly. Usually, doctors advise that you check your blood sugar levels four or five times a day, particularly in the morning and after meals. This will help you determine if your sugar levels are within the healthy range. Besides, testing your blood sugar level regularly will help you get a grasp on how certain food affect your blood sugar and adjust them appropriately.

5. Monitor your pregnancy
Gestational diabetes can increase the risk of both the mother and the baby developing complications. Therefore, you need to have more antenatal appointments so that the baby can be monitored.

6. Take medication if necessary
If your blood sugar level remains high despite making the necessary lifestyle changes, you may need insulin injections or diabetes pills to keep your blood sugar under control and protect your baby.

If you manage gestational diabetes with the tips mentioned above, you’ll deliver a healthy baby without complications.

How to Choose a Breast Pump

Preparing to welcome a new baby can be hectic as you need to make decisions about things like the baby’s crib, the room color, stroller, car seat, etc. You might also be worried about your child’s feeding especially if you plan on breastfeeding your baby exclusively. A breast pump is a must-have item for working mothers who intend to exclusively breastfeed their babies in the long term. Indeed, there are many different brands of breast pumps out there, but we will guide you on how to choose the best breast pump among the numerous ones in the market.

One of the first things you should consider when buying a breast pump is how convenient it is to use. Let’s admit it! A breast pump is one of those things you will potentially use several times in a day, so it makes sense for you to get one that is easy and convenient to use. That’s why it’s important to look at features that make the whole process of pumping easy. For example, a manual handpump is always a preferred choice if you are a home maker and occasionally want to use it.

A double electric breast pump is the most sought-after model for working mothers. A mother who is always on-the-go will usually opt for electric breast pump with rechargeable battery. With such breast pump, they can always pump anywhere and anytime. A note to the mothers who are keen in buying an electric breast pump, a closed system breast pump is highly recommended because it has barriers that prevent overflow milk from leaking into the pumping system, unlike the open system pump.

Another tip for buying a good breast pump is to read customer reviews. You can easily tell how good and convenient a product is from the reviews of those who have used it. So instead of hurrying to buy just any breast pump that has been advertised to you, you should, take some time to read what customers say about it. A glance through the reviews will help you make an informed decision on whether or not you should settle for a particular breast pump.

Of course, you should also consider the durability of the breast pump you intend to buy. While there are many cheap and affordable breast pumps in the market, it won’t make sense for you to purchase one just because it’s cheap. You have to give value to your money, by ensuring that you buy something that is durable, and that you can comfortably use for a long time without any functionality glitches. That said, you can easily decipher how durable a breast pump is from the customer review section.

While it’s ok to go for affordable stuff, you should avoid buying those extremely cheap breast pumps because they are hardly durable and often get worse after a short period.

Why You Need a Gender Reveal Party

Discovering the sex of babies is a milestone for most expectant parents and that’s why gender reveal parties are increasingly becoming trendy. Just like baby showers, gender reveal parties are often thrown by the parents-to-be during pregnancy. The intention is always to find out the sex of the baby in the company of friends and family members.

Expectant parents who plan on organizing gender reveal parties always opt to not be told the sex of their babies at an ultrasound. They will rather prefer their doctor to write it on a piece of paper for revelation during the gender reveal party so they can share the surprise with friends and family.

There are many different ways of revealing the sex of the baby during a gender reveal party. For example, opening a box filled with blue or pink balloons, or getting a gender reveal cake whose interior is either blue or pink. Most often, the surprise in gender reveal parties always feature the colors pink and blue, representing a girl and a boy child respectively. Of course, there is no standard way of organizing a gender reveal party, and all you need to do is to figure out ways to make it fun and memorable for you and your guests.

One of the major reasons to organize a gender reveal party is for the expectant parents to have the opportunity to find out the sex of their unborn baby in the company of friends and relatives who matter to them.! There are no better ways of getting such exciting information than in the company of your innermost circle of friends and relatives!

A gender reveal party is also the perfect opportunity for the parents-to-be to party in the company of their loved ones. The fact is that pregnancy naturally comes with lifestyle changes such as limiting night outs and partying, as well as avoiding alcohol. If you haven’t had the opportunity to hang out and party with your friends since you got pregnant, a gender reveal party might just be the perfect opportunity for such catch-ups.

Gifts are also part of a gender reveal party. Let’s admit it, your primary motive may not be to receive gifts but who doesn’t enjoy receiving gifts from time to time? You are likely to receive an overflow of personal gifts as well as unisex baby gifts after a gender reveal party.
