Dealing With Postpartum Hair Loss

As scary as it sounds, postpartum hair loss is a common thing. While most women enjoy hair thickness caused by pregnancy, such joys are usually short-lived in some women, who unfortunately start experiencing hair loss after the birth of a baby. Well, such hair loss is normal and it’s often related to changes in the levels of hormones in the woman’s body. It should be noted that changes related to your hormone levels before, during and after pregnancy can affect hair growth.

That said, experiencing hormonal imbalance after childbirth is perfectly normal and one of the symptoms is postpartum hair loss. This condition, which is also known as postpartum alopecia, affects an estimated 40 to 50 percent of women in the months following childbirth. However, there are certain tips to dealing with postpartum hair loss.

1. Eat healthily
It is no longer news that the quality of food we eat reflects on our overall optimal health. Postpartum women should therefore ensure that their diets are balanced with vitamins and nutrients from fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Many scientists have opined that a healthy diet can hinder the progression of postpartum hair loss.

2. Nutritional supplements
The use of top quality nutritional supplements may also go a long way to stop postpartum hair loss. Thus, women suffering from this condition should consult with their doctors about their desire to take vitamins or nutrient supplements in a bid to promote hair growth. The American Pregnancy Association particularly recommends supplements such as Zinc, Iron, Vitamins C and E, as well as Vitamin B complex and/or biotin (B7).

3. Change or modify your hair care routine
If you are suffering from postpartum hair loss, then you might consider changing or modifying your hair care routine. Instead of using regular shampoo, you might consider opting for postpartum hair shampoo, which is fortified with biotin and silica as well as a deep-moisture conditioner. Moreover, you should avoid using hot rollers or straightening irons to prevent further hair damage caused by excessive heat. Besides, you should also opt for other specialty products such as scalp sprays and hair masks recommended by dermatologists.

4. Avoid stress
Avoiding stress will help you regain your optimal health after childbirth. This assertion can be explained by the fact that reducing your stress levels is beneficial in regulating hormone imbalances, which most women suffer from after childbirth. You can reduce your stress levels by practicing different relaxation techniques including mindfulness, meditation, and breathing exercises. You could also take out time to do regular gentle or moderate exercises, which can go a long way to regulate your hormone levels, thereby also stopping the progression of postpartum hair loss.
